Zikora - Sisterhood, motherhood, womanhood
Book: Zikora
Author: Adichie
Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (Only cos it’s short)
Sisterhood, motherhood, womanhood
Of all the hoods, these are my fav genres
When you read the Title Zikora. It feels like Adichi is trying science fiction. But it’s far from that.
there is not a book of hers which I haven’t read. With every book she touches the cords of my heart. Each character and mostly women are strongly and sharply etched. A mother delivering her child without the father by her side. A mother considering circumcision as a barbaric act. A sister sharing secrets and problems with another sister. A mother being graceful in the shadow of a second wife.
She often talks about the status of women back in Nigeria where men take second wives for male heirs or wealth reasons. Second wife, other wife, senior wife and many other ways to explain this strange relationship, I can’t fathom. Is monogamy difficult? Is there nothing like one love, one soulmate, and the one that is made for you. Probably not, more so for men as they get many!
They say men are in general polygamists. Nature has created us in such a way where men can walk away while women are busy for months post conception. What kind of the message do such fathers give to their daughters. I have often found that the way a father treats a daughter sets the minimum standards of how she will let any man treat her.
Every fiction that shows the beauty and shine of beautiful women is my go to. It’s a treasure that keeps giving. I learn more about myself through other women. Through the lives, their different roles, and their many loves.
Sisterhood, motherhood, womanhood!
