Romanticizing Psychopaths
One of my guilt pleasures is crime fiction, documentary and series. I do show borderline craziness occasionally but a psychopath is a bit out of scope for a middle class, good bringing and happily married woman. It’s possible that one despite having no skeletons in the closet may feel boredom and commit some exciting crimes. Or be like me and watch some crime shows to fulfill her need for drama. There is something to say about boredom and productivity. The strong incidence hunger, scandals, spice and intrigue, fueling the imagination and emotions.
I don’t like crimes out of greed, money and power. Those are civil crimes and seem basic. I like the real criminal ones inducing a blood rush and feelings of shock, horror, fear, unbelievability, and sometimes paranoia. An event that is so remote but also can happen to anyone.
It is important to satisfy my own boredom, which always wants something to happen. Not going out or experiencing things but stay the introvert and feel or experience things in my head. A good book, a good show, a good conversation, an article, some writing and the dreams in my sleep. All these open up imaginary worlds in my mind.
I binge watch a good crime series full of murders and psychotic killers. A world so ugly that my life looks beautiful and heaven in comparison. irrespective of the fact that I have no reasons to complain.
Here are some of my favorite ones and suggest you watch them too.
- You(Netflix)
What is not to like in You! Based on novel Hidden bodies it has more bodies than you can imagined. A frequent killer is not your traditional serial killer. There is no pattern here but they survive the world doing crimes on impulse, passion and obsession. The hero is the boy Dan from Gossip girls. He is handsome in a haunting way where you get hung on his boyishness that doesn’t hint at his inside evil. The what’s are interesting. Don’t we live an ugly urban psychotic story, where normal looking people eventually reveal themselves to be murderous with tumble loads of skeletons in their closet. The best part is that the protagonist loves books and works in book shops and libraries. A pleasure for bibliophiles as he quotes classics and psychological insights. A well read man is a turn on but there is something wrong with us if we forget that he is quite a broken man.
- Broadchurch (Netflix)
A gross crime followed by a police investigation. It opens up the dark secrets like an onion in a simple peaceful quaint town until you realise the murderer is someone you expect the least.
- Sinner (Netflix)
This is a three part series each unique and shocking in its content. It’s strange how our minds work and the past come back to haunt no matter how deep you bury it.
- Criminal (Netflix)
Comes in multiple language and dubbed in English to meet my crime fetish. These are basically only interview sessions with possible accused or victims eventually leading to a big revelation and crime solving.
- Mind hunter (Netflix)
Criminal psychology and American obsession with psychopaths. A complicated group of FBI researchers try to understand and predict possible patterns to catch the criminals before their strike. Is it possible to profile people so easily and prevent the horrible crimes. Truth comes at a price.
- Don’t f*** with cats (Netflix)
A cat killer turned into an actual homocide as the criminal feeds on the online attention and gross hatred he gets from the followers. It’s unimaginable what goes in the minds of such people but on drama this show is five on five.
- Killing Eve (Amazon Prime)
Because Normal is Boring
Killing Eve, could very well be about Eve - Sandra Oh. But Jodie Comer playing Oksana or Videnilla takes the cake. It’s a new take on the obsessive love hate relationship between a criminal and the police. The shocking number and methods of killings coupled with a desperation to understand how some one can kill without any guilt. It really isn’t a regular job but for some that’s what it is and no more!
- Marcella (Netflix)
Have you ever wondered? You have to be a bit crazy to think crazy. You have to be a murderer to think like a murderer. The first two seasons take you inside the dark mind of the protagonist- Marcella. She seems more scary than the criminals who have a motive, while she has none. The series has its flaws but racy and murderous enough to keep one hooked.
My search for such psycho shows will continue. Meanwhile you catch up on these!
