A Man Called Ove, Fredrik Backman
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Great expectations
There are books that are trending on all book forums, book lists and considered a must read. And when you are looking for a safe read, this seems to be the go to. However I have realised that I have enjoyed books which are quaint and surprise me by being excellent reads, however the popular books disappoint me as I start with a certain high expectation, constantly judging the plot, characters, twist, dialogues and the author waiting for it to justify the so called popularity. However this book failed me and I failed myself.
Basically, a ‘feel good’ book with an assortment of misfits finding love and camaraderie amongst themselves. The protagonist reminds me of typical widowed Parsee octogenarian who is lonely and nostalgic about the past, trying to make sense of his role and need in current times. Certain portions are cute and reminds you of your own grandparents. Then some heart rendering topics of immigration, old age care, lgbtq and the typical white shirt villain. The middle class interpretation of the constant struggle of old vs new, system vs simplicity, rules vs rebels, and the eventual victory of love.
I think one reason it failed for me because I picked a random audio book from YouTube and the reader was slow and drudging thru it with poor enunciation and background noise. It seemed like she was actually reading for old age people, and paid no effort to make it interesting. And the worst part was that she didn’t even finish it. However I did find a good audiobook later, and if you want to listen try this.
Anyways the translation does add to the experience but I won’t blame the book. However given the plot and character sketch, it was perfect for a movie plot, which has already happened. And probably is what I should have chosen to do rather than, Listen.
