Number the Stars, Lois Lowry

Getting to relish the world literature is like taking a world tour right from the comfort of your couch. A good friend and a fellow bibliophile pointed out this book to me, based on the fact that I live in Copenhagen and hence knowing about this city and it’s past would be interesting to me. Also to the curious mind, knowing Denmark’s role in the world war was also on the agenda as not much has been written about it in the history books.

It helped me understand how Denmark while officially declaring a white flag continued to drive resistance thru it’s youth and common people who fought the Germans and protected the Jews. How they burnt their own navy fleet so Germans couldn’t misuse it. While their king declared defeat to Germans without a single gunshot there was wisdom in his actions for the safety of his people. All this just to gift a world of human decency, which also deeply connects with the Danish culture of simple and decent life.

Thank you my friend for referring a good read!
