ComiCon Calling

Since I first heard about ComiCon in the English TV Comedy – The Big Bang Theory, I have been super (pun intended) excited about ComiCon event. a very popular event in the Americas with geeks and nerds flocking it and flaunting their love for comics and super heroes. In india it is a very recent phenomenon with its previous chapters held in Bangalore, Mumbai and New Delhi. It was my first Comic Convention in Mumbai at World Trade Center and believe me it was a treat for comic lovers – young and old.
It had everything a comic lover could ask for. There were people dressed up in all the favourite Comic avatars of Superman, Spiderman, Bat Man. There were shops selling comic collectibles and souvenirs – toys, mugs, t-shirts, party accessories, kids toys, key chains, magnets, mini dolls, books, comics and posters. Mumbai being the capital of Bollywood – this was both a comic and film convention with comic books on Ek tha tiger and Ra-one also available with a special tribute to Hindi movies through special works on Bollywood’s popular characters like ‘Widhwa Maa aur Andhi Behan’. There were speaker sessions where film and art personalities came in to share their views.
There were stalls on vintage comics, Mario Miranda’s work, AmarChitra Kathaand Tinkle. The ComiCon also catered if not enough, to the local Indian comic lover through Raj Comics’ superheroes like Nagraj and Dhruv and kids special Chhota Bheem, Ganesha and Krishna. There was a special emphasis on thenewbreedof upcoming cartoonists and their works.
The convention has just started and of course there is a lot to be done. Some things I wish to see in future ComiCons are: characters from the Comic world of an average Indian - political cartoons like RK Laxman’s Common Man; Amul’s advertisements; Pran’s Diamond comics (Chacha Chaudhury, Pinki and Billoo), Champak, Chandamama and other regional comic characters.
But nevertheless I had a rocking time and burnt a hole in my pocket with all the shopping (see list below). After all I might be a comic lover but I am a woman too ;)))
Toy Hulk Hands
Comics - Double Digest of Nagraj and Dhruv, ‘The Itch you can’t Scratch’, 'Vidhwa Ma aur Andhi Behan'
Filmy stuff with funny quotes like Fridge Magnets, mug, t-shirts and coasters Posters – ‘Khadi Condom’ and ‘Toilet Humor’, Nagraj - Paper Doll
